That awkward moment when you text your principal in a joking way, just to find out that it was a parent...

Give Directions

This conversation involved most of my students.

"How'd your parents die, Ms. Kwan?"

Well, they aren't dead yet, they're in Edmonton

"Auntie Misty lives in Edmonton!"

"And your grandma?"

"No, she lives off the highway."

"Is it far?"

"No, you just get into your car and then you go vroom, and then turn, and then vroom, and then turn, and then you turn again, and then vroom, and you're there.  Then you turn on the driveway and park."

"Oh, okay."

Play Bible Computer Games

One of my stations that I have is computers.  During this time, they get to play a game with features a mouse to be their guide.  At the beginning of the game, there is a little intro where the mouse skateboards down a ramp and the kids find it so funny that they laugh with their whole body - because he moves his eyebrows.

Oh the joys of a child.

Know My Interests

I was talking about different interests in people and giving them four examples of my interests.

"Okay, my last interest is..."

"GOING TO EDMONTON!"

Talk About Big Grocery Stores

Two students are staying in for recess because they aren't feeling very well.  I'm sitting in my desk while they are building some sort of castle with the connecting cubes.

"We should go to Costco when we feel better!"

"Okay........  Costco? Is Costco a puppy?"

Think It's Christmas!

I asked the kids about the weather on Tuesday morning.  They all said, "SNOWY!"

One other kid pipes up and says, "That means it's Christmas tomorrow!"

Oh okay. That would be nice right now.  :)

Are Very Serious About Their Food

I was helping this kid open his granola bar because he asked me. When I opened it, I also broke it in half because there was clearly an indent where you can break it.  When he received it, he became angry and sad and started to cry.  He was just devastated because he did not want his granola bar broken.

I apologized and he looks at me and says, "I don't want to talk to you right now."

My heart... but it's okay.  In the end, he talked to me a minute after and he ate his granola bar.
Note to self: Never break his food in half..

Think I'm Their Mom

This one is pretty self explanatory.

A kid called me, "Mom?" and then corrected himself and said, "Ms. Kwan?"

I knew it was going to happen but it still is pretty cute that they would make that mistake.

Think I'm Japanese

Today in my Grades 1-3 music class, one student gets up and tells everyone that I'm Japanese.

I responded with, "I'm not Japanese, I'm Chinese."

All the students in the class proceeded to ask me to say something in Chinese for them...

Sigh..

Have Accidents

One minute before clean up and home time, this little girl asks for the hall pass to go to the bathroom. To this day, I have had no bathroom incident..... until today.

I had let the other kids get ready to go home by packing up their stuff.  While I was helping the other kids put their jackets on, I was getting suspicious and wondered why there was a little girl standing outside the bathroom.  So I tell her to go inside and check on this little girl for me but she responses with, "I can't get in!"

Now I was getting worried, and I try to open the door. It was locked.  So I started talking to the little girl through the door.  Let's call the girl, Heidi.

Open the door, Heidi!

"But I don't want you to see me!"

I keep telling her to open the door because there are other girls waiting to use the bathroom.  At this point, she is bawling her eyes out and saying that she can't.  In the midst of her crying and talking, I realized she had accidentally peed her pants.  So... I told her to open the door so I can help her.  Then she claims to say that she doesn't know how to unlock the door.  AGH! I was getting frustrated and all the other kids had gone home already.

But finally, the door somehow unlocked, and I see her half-dressed.  She was crying and telling me that she couldn't help it and she tried her best go as quickly as she could.  I helped her get dressed and by this time, she had stopped crying already.  I had to inform Heidi's mom about the unfortunate incident.  This is my first bathroom incident.

"No! The really tiny fishes drown in water all the time!"

"I can't run."

Why? Does your toe still hurt?

"No, it's because I have brand new glasses so I can only walk."

Play with Lego

This little boy is very creative with his lego building.  This is his dad's workshop; complete with two doors, a wheel spinning thing, and stairs to the top of the roof.  Who knows, maybe he'll become an architect when he grows up.

Make Me Smile

I have talked about creating a separate blog for the things kids say or do.  This blog would mainly be for the adorable or crazy stories I have about the kids I interact with every day.  Right now, I am just starting my first year of teaching half day Kindergarten, music from grades 1-10, and gym for grades 4-6.  It sounds a bit crazy but the things the kids say or do helps me through the day.  Some things may not seem like they make sense to you but I just want to make sure that it is recorded and I can refer to it later.

For the sake of privacy, I will not be showing pictures of the kids or using their real names.  I hope these stories will help brighten up your day as well!
